Car Battery Installation: Step-by-Step Guide

To begin the process, start by parking your vehicle. Then activate the parking brake and make sure your engine is turned off. Once you locate the battery, then the real process begins:

  1. Using a wrench, you’ll loosen the nut that secures the black cable (Negative) to the battery. There’s also specified wrenches and pliers that are specifically designed for car batteries.
  2. Once the nut has been loosened, you’ll be able to twist and pull the cable off. If your nut is stuck, don’t go at it with a screwdriver or another tool. Instead, try to loosen it more with the wrench until it gives way. If you’re still having trouble getting it off, try some penetrating oil.
  3. Follow these same instructions when dealing with the red battery cable from the positive terminal.
  4. Loosen and then remove the battery hold-down camp. This keeps the battery from shifting around under the hood.
  5. Now, once the battery is ready to be taken out, remove it carefully with both hands. Keep in mind that vehicle batteries are heavy.
  6. Using a baking soda and water mixture, or an available battery cleaning product to remove corrosion that may have built up in the battery tray or on the hold-down clamp.
  7. Use a wire brush and cleaning solution to clean off your vehicle’s battery cable connections.
  8. After this, place your vehicle’s new battery in the battery tray. Then secure the vehicle battery by tightening the hold-down clamp.
  9. Spray anti-corrosion solution on the new vehicle battery’s positive and negative terminals before connecting. Doing so can help protect your vehicle’s battery and lengthen its performance life.
  10. Attach the battery cables to your battery terminals. First, connect the red cable and then the black one.
  11. Make sure all your connections are secure, then try to move the battery. If it doesn’t move too much, you’re ready to go.
  12. Start your engine! If your battery has been properly connected, your engine will start up right away without issue.

Caution: When you’re moving your vehicle’s battery, remember to avoid spilling battery acid. Battery acid is extremely corrosive and will cause chemical burns!
