Transmission Cross Section Close-Up

If your car needs a transmission replacement, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Just how long does it take to replace a transmission? Not as long as you might think! That’s why it’s so essential to get it done as soon as possible when there’s an issue. While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, a standard transmission replacement generally takes a day or two. Some models may require a longer installation process of three or four days, but we’d be happy to give you an estimation at Allen Samuels Auto Group. Find out more about the transmission replacement process, and get more tips from our service department.

What Does a Transmission Do?

Before we dive into the transmission replacement process, what does a transmission do? A transmission works with your engine to create forward movement on the Waco roads. The engine generates power, which the transmission converts into torque. The transmission sends this torque to the wheels, which makes them rotate. An automatic transmission takes care of the entire process for the driver, while manual transmissions require the driver to shift gears to adjust the power output. The transmission also contains a liquid called “transmission fluid” that must be maintained and replaced, like motor oil or coolant.

How Do I Know If My Transmission Needs to Be Replaced?

Your transmission goes through a lot of wear and tear as you travel through Aransas Pass, and eventually, it needs some TLC. Before you need a full replacement, your transmission will likely send some warning signals. This is a key time to head to the service center to avoid further damage. So, what are the red flags of a bad transmission?

  • The check engine light is on.
  • Fluid is leaking from underneath the car.
  • The transmission fluid looks brown and cloudy or smells burnt.
  • The car has trouble switching gears on the road.
  • The car is making strange noises in neutral gear.
  • The car shakes or vibrates on the road.
