Air Filter Cleaning: Step-by-Step Guide

It’s a good idea to look through your owner’s manual before beginning to familiarize yourself with your car’s layout. Then, take a look at the general steps for how to clean an air filter:

  • Access the Air Filter: Your air filter will be encased in a housing, so you might need a screwdriver or wrench to access it. Be sure to remove the filter as cleanly as possible, and avoid shaking the loose debris into the intake.
  • Remove Loose Dirt, Dust, Etc.: Hold the air filter over a trash can and shake it. This will remove any debris sitting on the surface, so the rest of the cleaning process is easier.
  • Vacuum the Filter: Use a vacuum to remove the rest of the grime and dust from the filter.
  • Apply Air Filter Cleaner: If you have purchased an air filter cleaner solution, follow the directions on the package. You can also make your own solution by mixing water and mild laundry detergent at a 2:1 ratio. Spray your chosen solution onto the filter and let it sit for a few minutes.
  • Scrub with a Brush: Gently scrub the air filter with a soft brush. You can also use a toothbrush to get into the crevices easily.
  • Rinse Thoroughly & Dry: Rinse the filter completely. Hang it upside down to drip dry. Do not apply heat.
  • Reassemble the Filter: Once fully dry, replace the filter in its housing. Reassemble the housing, and you’re good to go!

Does the Cabin Air Filter Affect AC & Air Quality?

Does the cabin air filter affect AC? Yes, your cabin air filter can actually affect both your air conditioning system and your air quality. The cabin air filter collects everything from fine dust to leaves and even bugs that circulate throughout the cabin. When the filter becomes clogged, it can no longer catch debris effectively. This also means the air conditioner cannot circulate cool air efficiently.
