What is Brake Fluid?

Before you learn how to check brake fluid, it’s important to understand what brake fluid is and why your needs it. Brake fluid is the hydraulic fluid that helps to keep your brake pedal moving. It will lubricate your braking system to keep it from rusting and corroding overtime.

Most vehicles that you find between Waco to Hutchinson use glycol-ether based brake fluid but some may use silicone-based (DOT-5) or mineral oil-based (LMH). Regardless, always check your owners manual to make sure you’re using the right type.

How to Check Brake Fluid in 3 Steps

  1. Locate your vehicle’s brake fluid reservoir on the master cylinder typically placed underneath the hood..
  2. On the outside of the reservoir you should see “minimum” and “maximum” lines. Check the brake fluid against these lines. If the brake fluid is closer to the minimum line, you may need brake service or brake fluid replacement, you can schedule a service appointment near Aransas Pass for both.
  3. Note  the color of the brake fluid. If it’s dark brown or black and looks more like oil, you’ll need a brake fluid flush.

What Color is Brake Fluid Normally?

At Allen Samuels Auto Group, we often get asked, “What color is brake fluid when it’s new?” Fresh brake fluid should be almost clear but with a slight tint of yellow to it. Overtime, your brake fluid will change in color because of its use with the brake system. As we previously mentioned, dark oil-like brake fluid contains too much debris and dirt and can disrupt the performance of your brakes if left unresolved.
